Here's why I want to be there.

Last year, I decided to 'walk my talk' and become a true Web 2.0 practitioner. I'd had it with theory alone, and wanted to experience it myself so I launched my own blog, became a modest Twitter (via Hootsuite), and a more active user of Facebook and LinkedIn. I also subscribed to several other social media platforms, but those are the ones I use most often for the time being. My blog is built on WordPress. I got trained by Diane Bourque (WordPress expert and trainer) on how to use it and I have become as independent I want to be for the time being. I now post all my own articles, but I know that I haven't fully explored the tool's potential.

WordCamps are a great place to learn about blogging and many other aspects linked to keeping my space well and alive in the blogosphere. It's important for me to go through this learning process as I'm becoming more involved in personal branding and web 2.0 projects. I want to become a better consultant and feel more confident than ever in providing advice to small businesses and independent professionals who want to change the way they do business by using web 2.0 technologies. Showing by example is really essential for me. Those that know me will tell you that I am an authentic and sincere person and I want it to demonstrate it.

Here are some of the conferences I hope to attend.

10 years After The Manifesto: The Cluetrain stops at WordCampBoston. Some of the authors will take part in a panel discussion. Need I say more? I'm thinking of bringing my copy of the book and get it autographed.

Academia\Higher Ed in Practice: I look forward to this one because I think that blogs could become a great educational tool. I was discussing this with a teacher friend of mine. She teaches literature. How about having a book review blog with content being provided by your students?

Get Seen: Web Video and Media 101: This will very new stuff for me. I really look forward to learning more about choosing and using the right equipment etc. One day, I hope to be able to use video and photography in my blog. I have lots of ideas about doing just that.

Rock My Blog: a marketing techniques presentation which will also look into increasing traffic, identifying great content, etc. All sounds good to me.

Using Plugins, Useful Plugins. I definitely need to know more about Plugins. Plugins are tools that extend the functionality of WordPress. I'm not a very technical person, but I have to learn and master the art of choosing and installing Plugins. Plugins are a fabulous asset to building great blogs. I know that much.

WordPress Powers My Startup: This conference is of particular interest to me. It will include entrepreneurs' testimonials about their transition to web 2.0, my favorite subject. I intent to write more and more about this topic.

I especially look forward to the WPChicks Brunch on Sunday morning. What a great idea. Can't wait to meet all these smart women bloggers and WordPress fans. We're very lucky to have famous and very interesting female bloggers here in Montreal. Michelle Blanc, Kim Vallee, Tara Hunt are a real treat. We have less famous bloggers and experts, like Diane Bourque, with whom I'll be riding to Boston. We'll have ample time to rea all 95 theses of the Cluetrain Manifesto one by one… Markets are conversations…. Conversations among human beings sound human. They are conducted in a human voice…..

I can't imagine being disappointed with my first experience at a WordCamp. At a minimum, I'll enjoy revisiting Boston. If you've attended a WordCamp before, tell me was your experience like?

If you don't believe me, click here and check out all the terrific reviews it has gotten since it was launched last summer. Written by Mitch Joel, Canada's Digital Marketing Rock Star as many say is a book where you can find out everything you ever wanted to know about digital marketing, personal branding, social media, but didn't dare ask. A roadmap of some sort to help you cross over to the new world of interconnectivity. (like Dan Ariely said author of Perdictably Irrational which I haven't read yet). When I turned the last page, I felt I had run a marathon. I felt I had put out a lot of effort, kept my focus on the big picture while going over chapter after chapter of this amazing amount of information and ended up learning so much. A bit like one would feel (I imagine) in tackling a marathon one mile at a time in order to reach to the ultimate goal. Mine was to learn as much as possible which I did and I felt good afterwards. This might seem strange coming from someone who has a somewhat good knowledge of digital marketing. I have recently started this blog in the hope of living up the experience of digital marketing more thoroughly. I've gotten somewhat involved with social media: Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Mybloglog, Friendfeed, Technorati, Delicious, Youtube, Google Reader and others. I followed the Canadian Marketing Association Certificate in E-Marketing Course given by Mitch Joel himself and got my certificate. (A real gift I made to myself by doing that. I highly recommend that course). I worked as a web strategy consultant for a major company for the past 3 years. In short, I think I knew more than the average folk from the outset. I was a bit curious to see how much more I would learn. The conclusion is that Mitch's book will now become a reference book for me. His book is a real roadmap. Of the specific things I learned, I certainly appreciated the chapter on Digital Nomads. If you're not familiar with that expression just think Wifi and I-phones, or being connected all the time, anywhere. I am not very knowledgeable about mobile marketing. I've not worked yet on any mobile marketing projects, so it made it very interesting for me. (For your reference, in Montreal, Yasha Sekhavat is an expert in that area). I also enjoyed the chapter called You are Media, which deals a lot about personal branding, a new in-word which is not always well understood. Mitch Joel is not an inventor, but he is an awesome communicator and a very passionate man. I find that there is something evangelical about him because of his true power of persuasion. (This personality trait might come from his love of motivational books.) In reading Six Pixels, I felt that he was speaking to those of us that need to acknowledge the changes are at our doorsteps and to start embracing those changes in new media now. He does so in a very convincing and authentic manner. If I was a senior level manager or executive in the corporate world, this book could serve as a major wake up call. The message I would receive is Act before you're too far behind… This book would also answer all of the many questions I might have about new social media. It would provide me with a picture of things, and how everything interlinks…. (Note: I would strongly recommend his book as gifts to your clients for those of you like me who are consultants.) Another thing gained by reading the book is all of his references. Many contemporary authors are mentioned. There are tons of concrete examples of companies that have successfully used the Web. In short, you get how it all works and fits together by reading about true stories. I think that my favorite quote from the book would be. It says it all for me:

Now we're all forced to understand better what happens when user-amassed wisdom forms in the shape of communities and meets through the power of technology. (p.225)

I really have great admiration for Mitch Joel. I have posted an article previously about him. Click here to read it: Thank you Mitch Joel! He is so talented and energetic, the sky is literally the limit for him. I wish him all the best. My feeling is that he is a man who simply loves life a nd people and wants us all to have access to all that is best… Thanks Mitch, once again! Let me know if you also read the book and what you thought! P.S. Six Pixel of Separation refers to the famous adage where we are only six steps away from any other person. Wikipedia says it this way: Six degrees of separation refers to the idea that, if a person is one step away from each person they know and two steps away from each person who is known by one of the people they know, then everyone is at most six steps away from any other person on Earth.

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom.

Essentially, the guy woke me up to a new world and got me dancing again. I’d been working in marketing for close to 10 years. I’d done work as a focus group moderator and as a marketing consultant all those years. In 2006, I got involved for the first time in web strategy projects. What a great chance that was for me. I read everything I could and tried my very best to provide good advice. Fortunately for me, I was working with very bright and knowleageable people who could validate or not some of my thoughts, ideas, work. It was a great feeling to be able to test ideas and concepts out with these folks. To feel more confident about providing marketing advice as it relates to the web, I decided to take the Emarketing Certificat Course. It was a 4 month long program with weekly evening courses. That was the best decision I ever made in this century. Mitch Joel, what a Godsend! I think that was the last time he gave the course, so I’m doubly grateful. Mitch is a passionate, well grounded man who just lives his life doing what he loves and a big part of that seems to be the web. Actually, it’s even more than that, its the digital world that thrills him. Mitch Joel is on the way to becoming an international figure that we will hear of for many years to come. He’s already very well respected in the Digital marketing world community, especially for his expertise on blogging, but I figure he’ll continue on and become someone known of the general public. He’s interested in so many things. Music, Motivation being subjects he blogs or talks about a lot. I wish him all the best and continued success. I owe him a lot, he’s enabled me to see the world in a totally different light. Dave Haber was also on board for some of the classes. He’s a very smart guy too. A bit more timid, not letting his passion about the web show as much. I believe he's left Twist Image and set off on his own in the past year. All the best to him! You can find out more about Mitch Joel through his blog: Six Pixel of Separation. He has a new book coming out in September with the same name. Good luck to him. Will be sure to check that out when it comes out.

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader.

Why does TED matter to me? Because it keeps me in touch with new ideas, new things and extraordinary people. I started listening to TED talks in 2007. At that time, I was taking the Canadian Marketing Association E-Marketing Certificate Course. Mitch Joel was our teacher and he recommended that we get hooked on TED. How lucky can one get!

I’ve listened to TED talks regularly since then. TED is a place to find out what’s happening in so many different areas. I encourage anyone and everyone to check TED out. Its not time consuming since the videos last around 20 minutes or shorter. By listening to TED presentations, I have a sense of what’s happening in the big world through the eyes of exceptional passionate people who really have something to say.

Here are some of my favorites presentations.

No 1 – Charles Moore on the Seas of Plastic

Everyone on this whole planet should listen to this guy. The pictures he shows us on the ravages that plastics do to our waterways are disturbing. I felt so ignorant and so damn sorry for the birds that end up eating this stuff. It’s a sad thing. Since viewing this presentation, I pick up every piece of plastic I see. I’m especially reminded of the video everytime I walk along the lake where I live. Don’t know how many bottle caps I’ve picked up since. It is the most important and clear presentation I’ve seen on the impact of plastic in our environment. It’s not a happy story, but do yourself a favour and watch it. It’s great medecine.

No 2. Jill Bolte Taylor – Stroke of Insight

Her recollection of her stroke is absolutely incredible. I’d never really listened to a neurosurgeon talk about life in such a way. Her detailed explanation of what actually happened to her, physiologically was captivating. I was truly moved.

No 3. Rick Warren – Living a life of purpose.

I just love this stuff. So simple, but yet so hard to do. Very inspiring. Pastor Rick Warren is the author of The Purpose-Driven Life, which sold some 30 million copies worldwide. I haven’t read that book yet, but maybe I will.

No 4. Tim Berners Lee – The Next Web

This guy invented the Web. It’s interesting to hear him talk about where he thinks the Web is heading towards. Data is the name of the game. Data, data, data…. It’s all about relationships. Learn how it all links or will all link…. He’s not the best speaker. There’s a nervousness in his voice that’s a bit aggravating, but beyond that, it’s worth the while.

No 5. Dan Gilbert on our mistaken expectations.

Great presentation on expectations and how we’re actually all very mixed up about some of those! He, who happens to be a Harvard Psychologist, ends his conference by saying that if we’re not here in 10,000 years, it’s because ‘we underestimated the odds of our future pains and overestimated the value of our own present pleasure ». Now there’s something to think about…

Je devrais commencer sous peu Everything is Miscellaneous – The Power of the New Digital Disorder, de David Weinberger.
